Video and Multimedia
When adding any multimedia to your website, be sure to follow these guidelines so that everyone can access your content.
Guidelines for accessible multimedia
Add captions and transcripts
“When including any video or multimedia, provide synchronized captions for the deaf, synchronized audio descriptions for the blind, and a text transcript for those who are both deaf and blind.” —International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP)
Programs such as YouTube and Vimeo can add captions automatically, but the quality may vary, so accuracy verification is recommended. Tools such as Trint can provide video transcripts. (note: Trint is a paid service)
Avoid flashing content
Refrain from using content that flashes or flickers rapidly, as it can trigger seizures in users with photosensitive epilepsy. Content should not flash more than three times in a one-second period. This applies to any animation that is on the site.
Avoid automatic media play
Do not have videos or audio autoplay as it can be disruptive and disorienting for some users. Instead, provide a way for users to start and stop the media. Background video falls into this category as well. This applies to any media that plays for more than 5 seconds.
